Man Utd transfer news LIVE: Maguire to stay, Spurs 'to sell' Hojbjerg, Alonso 'rejects' move, Spinazzola talks

Erik ten Hag has stepped up his pursuit of a left-back and a midfielder before Friday's transfer deadline with a number of options on the Red Devils' shortlist with some late moves in mind

There's now just four days left of the 2023 summer transfer window and Manchester United do not have much time left to get their deals done.

Erik ten Hag's side have already spent heavily in the window with the signings of Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund. The squad still needs some major surgery, however.

The Red Devils look to be closing in on a move for goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, who will become the club's fourth addition. Ten Hag still wants a left-back and a midfielder though, and there are plenty of options for the Dutchman to consider.

Marc Cucurella, Marcos Alonso and Rico Henry could all fill the gap in defence and it appears that talks are ongoing for all three. Talks have also opened regarding some surprise names including Nicolas Tagliafico and Leonardo Spinazzola.

Regarding the midfield vacancy, Fiorentina star Sofyan Amrabat has been linked all summer. Bayern Munich star Ryan Gravenberch could also be on his way to Old Trafford in a swap deal involving Scott McTominay.

Stay tuned for the latest updates from Old Trafford throughout Tuesday...

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is a transfer target for Manchester United in the closing week of the transfer window – and Jose Mourinho has already explained just why any club should be interested in the Denmark midfielder.

The Tottenham midfielder has been identified as a late target by Erik ten Hag’s side. United have been in the market for an additional deep-lying midfielder all summer, with Sofyan Amrabat of Fiorentina also on their radar.

Earlier this summer, Spurs had agreed a £30million deal to sell Hojbjerg to Atletico Madrid but the deal collapsed as personal terms could not be agreed. All parties are believed to be open to a deal this week should agreement be found on a transfer fee.

Hojbjerg spent the first half of his career in Germany at Bayern, with loan spells at Augsburg and Schalke, before joining Southampton in 2016 – where he was a key player across four seasons. He was then signed by Mourinho at Tottenham, where he has made 146 first-team appearances.

"I would say that for me, looking at Arsenal, there is this element of experimentation," he said on Sky Sports. "Full-backs think they can play midfield, midfielders think they can play at full back. Sometimes you need to go back to basics. I’d expect next week Mikel Arteta is going to end that experiment and go with a solid back four."

Chelsea wing-back Marc Cucurella is on Manchester United’s shortlist for a late summer deal – but the Spaniard has already spoken out about the ‘pressure’ of playing at bigger clubs.

"I play all my career in a [smaller] club so we don't have this pressure," Cucurella told ESPN earlier this summer. "When you come to these big clubs, you feel this pressure and sometimes it is not easy to play with this pressure because you know you need to win every game.

"Sometimes you need to adapt as well to these situations, but this is part of life. Sometimes you have good years, bad years, but the most important thing is to learn and have energy to improve."

This may be relevant to United’s interest – the club who have the largest following of any Premier League club and who generate more noise than any other

Harry Maguire’s future at Manchester United remains undecided as the summer transfer window reaches its final few days.

Maguire has been the subject of firm interest from West Ham over the past few weeks, but remains a United player. The Hammers agreed a £30million transfer fee with United for earlier in the window and appeared to be on the brink of signing him, only for the move to collapse.

West Ham were ultimately unable to finalise personal terms with the 30-year-old, who has two years left on his £190-000-a-week contract at Old Trafford. With Maguire taking a pay cut to move to east London, United would have had to agree a pay-out for the England international.

David Moyes’ side moved onto other deals, signing Edson Alvarez and Mohammed Kudus from Ajax, Southampton ’s James Ward-Prowse and Stuttgart’s Konstantinos Mavropanos. But The Sun claimed over the weekend that they had since reignited talks and were willing to pay more to sign Maguire.

Man United have made an approach to Brentford over a possible move for defender Rico Henry, according to The Daily Mail.

United have drawn up a shortlist of potential options after Luke Shaw suffered a muscle injury which looks set to sideline him for several months. Fellow left-back Tyrell Malacia is also out injured, while Brandon Williams has joined Ipswich on loan.
